The role 

The Platform and Reliability Engineering Group are responsible for the technology platforms and services that underpin the Rightmove website, ensuring it is available, secure and performing to a world class standard. We strive to deliver annual availability of at least 99.99% (less than 5 mins downtime a month). Being the infrastructure backbone of Rightmove, we work in a fast-paced environment which is rewarding and requires us to work together closely as well as collaboratively across the organisation to ensure the sites reliability. As part of the wider Product Development team, we recognise that to deliver the best products and features for our consumers and customers we need to work effectively as a healthy, high performing technology organisation. We work together with Architecture, DBAs, QAs, Data Analytics, SRE’s and the Product Development teams to enable Rightmove’s business strategy.


The Core Infrastructure Engineer sits within the Platform and Reliability Engineering Group and is responsible for engineering, operation and security of the technology platforms and services that underpin the Rightmove website. They champion operational excellence ensuring we uphold our already world-class quality of service whilst enabling the business to develop and deliver its product offering at pace. The role reports to the Engineering Manager – Core Infrastructure and SRE


A typical week might involve


  • Working on internal projects such implementing new technologies, migrating services from legacy to new technology, or maintaining and improving existing technology
  • Responding to incidents, fixing bugs/faults, identifying and resolving problems, working collaboratively across both 3rd party vendors and internal development and product teams
  • Building infrastructure as code modules to develop and optimise our datacentre and cloud platforms
  • Observing and highlighting areas which could be improved with automated tasks to better support business needs, and implementing solutions for these
  • Managing vendors and remote hands for the installation and maintenance of datacentre infrastructure and hardware


Current projects include designing and building a cloud platform for our microservice and data analytics workloads, continuing our move to containerisation with Docker and Kubernetes, migrating legacy services to Linux from Solaris and network upgrades to improve capacity and security.


We’re looking for someone who has

  • Significant experience in Linux/Unix administration skills
  • Experience building and operating VXrail with vSan and VMware ESXi clusters for business-critical workloads
  • Experience building and operating cloud platforms/services and infrastructure on GCP through Terraform for business-critical workloads
  • Experience with Networking e.g. Routers, Switches, Routing protocols, IP Addressing.
  • Experience with automation and tooling e.g. Gitlab, Terraform, Ansible, Packer, Docker
  • Scripting skills with Bash and or Python
  • Experience using configuration management tools e.g. Puppet
  • Experience with monitoring, logging and alerting tools
  • Experience using version control systems e.g. Bitbucket, Gitlab
  • Experience with traffic management/load balancing/API gateways e.g. F5, NGINX, Kong
  • Excellent understanding of how the internet / websites work – HTTP, DNS and the TCP/IP protocol stack
  • Experience with storage arrays and Linux filesystems
  • Excellent understanding of security controls and risk in relation to web services
  • Has strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to work on-call on a rotating schedule
  • Experience working in an agile development environment
