The role

Engineering Managers at Rightmove help engineers make great technical decisions and develop their skills and experience. They support efficient team-working, set technical standards and direction, and grow strong communities of technical practice.

The Engineering Manager – Platforms, manages the team responsible for delivering the tools and technology platform that supports application delivery and reliability across all Rightmove Product Engineering teams. Our focus is to provide a secure and highly performant application platform to allow safe, fast and frequent delivery of functionality across the consumer and customer digital experience underpinning the Rightmove business.

The role reports to the Head of Technology Operations and works closely with the Core infrastructure and Site Reliability Engineer Manager, Database Engineering Manager, Technical Product Owner and Agile Delivery Manager. As part of the wider Product Development group, we recognise that to deliver the best products and features for our consumers and customers we need to work together as a high performing technology organisation. We work collaboratively across a mix of product focused and centralised teams, together working to enable Rightmove’s strategy.

Typical week as Engineering Manager:

  • Provide day to day support for individuals in your team, ensuring they have what they need to be successful
  • Understand current priorities across the team’s projects and support tasks
  • Identify and address key risks in relation to people, process or technology, escalating promptly where necessary
  • Promote craftsmanship and quality, establishing high technical standards and continuous improvement
  • Explore new ways to deliver frequently and reliably into production
  • Help drive the adoption of a SRE culture across Rightmove engineering teams
  • Coach and develop your people, with regular 1-to-1s and continuous feedback
  • Support engineers to actively drive forward our technology platform, and manage technical debt
  • Build technical communities, where teams are encouraged to share knowledge and help each other
  • Hire great people for the team’s long-term success and deliver an amazing candidate experience
  • Stay up to date with the latest technologies and approaches to application software delivery

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous hands-on software engineering experience and can mentor software engineers
  • Understands application delivery and deployment pipelines and best practice patterns
  • Has experience working with highly distributed application platforms
  • Is comfortable working in hybrid cloud environments, and with multiple SaaS partners
  • Creates an environment that encourages people to try out new things and learn from their mistakes
  • Will take the initiative when spotting an opportunity for improvement
  • Can tackle complex problems and help drive the right technology solution
  • Champions resilience, scalability, security and privacy, ensuring they’re at the forefront of decision-making
  • Understands the wider architectural impact and ensures a continuous evolution of the platform
  • Encourages open two-way feedback so that teams share honestly, early and often
  • Is passionate about technology and engineering craftsmanship
  • Brings stakeholders on the journey to encourage buy-in and help shape plans

Ultimately, we care much more about the person you are and how you approach things, than a list of specific qualifications. If you are smart, self-motivated, and passionate about delivering great technology solutions, and would thrive on the challenge of working for one of the UK’s most popular websites, then we’d love to hear from you.
